Your Location: Home > Hangzhou Travel Guide > Hangzhou Cycling Routes

Traveling by bike combines sightseeing with sports and health. You can have more freedom to travel and ride in an environmentally friendly way. You'll experience more of the people of hangzhou and experience more of nature. Hangzhou has long been a popular destination for cyclists and active travellers. The city was the first in China to develop a public bicycle sharing system, which today is one of the most robust programmes in the world; more than a dozen rental kiosks dot the West Lake area. As one of the world-famous scenic resorts, it’s no exaggeration to say that in Hangzhou, there is a scenic spot every step you take. Among these scenic spots, some scatter right beside roads, and some hide in mountains. Hence, cycling has been widely accepted as the best way to travel around Hangzhou. Here is some representative cycling routes:

The Route: North and west of West Lake Natural Scenic Route
Start Point: Broken Bridge
Broken Bridge-Bai Causeway- Solitary Hill -Su Causeway
Finishing Point: Su causeway
Distance: 5.4 KM

The Route Introduction:
Starting with Hangzhou's iconic, lake-traversing bridege- Broken Bridge! Heading to west, past by the famous causeway-Bai Causeway. On the Bai causeway, you can visit the Zhejiang Provincial Mesum to know the entire history, culture of Hangzhou. Later, the Pinhu Autumn Moon which is the best place to look at the moon for the Mid-autumn Festival. A visit to The Temple of General Yue Fei (???) is also a good choice to know this great general in Hangzhou in the song Dynasty.

Next, ride toward the much longer and more serene Su Causeway, whose entire tree-lined length runs across West Lake.

This route travels across the famed Broken Bridge, onto Gushan Island, where you can visit numerous museums, nature trails and the renowned Louwailou restaurant, which specializes in Hangzhou cuisine.

This area offers a multitude of rewarding photo ops while traversing stone arch bridges.

Points of interest:
- Broken Bridge: – one of the Top 10 scenic spots, where the romantic legend of “Xuxian and Lady Snake” originated. Our experienced guides will tell you much more behind the ancient bridge, such as the origin of its unusual name.

- Bai Causeway, Solitary Hill – the story “Plum Wife and Crane Son” takes place on the hill. Lin Bu, also called Lin Hejing, was a real hermit and a talented poet in the Northern Song Dynasty.

On the top of the solitary hill is XiLing Seal Engravers Society, an academic community devoted to the study of inscription and seal-cutting. Founded in 1908 under the leadership of Wu Changshuo, the society was soon popular and developed into a famous center of seal-cutting, painting, and calligraphy.

The Su Causeway-was built in the fifth year of Yuanyou Period in the Northern Song Dynasty (1090) and has evolved since then. At that time, Su Shi (Dongpo), a poet known as the prefect in Hangzhou Prefecture, had the West Lake dredged, and built the Su Causeway by dredged silt. To commemorate Su Dongpo's achievements in controlling the West Lake, it is named as "Su Causeway". Since the Southern Song Dynasty, Spring Dawn on the Su Causeway has ranked the top among the "Ten Views of the West Lake". Built above horizontal waves, the long Causeway links the South Mountain and the North Mountain, adding a charming landscape for the West Lake.

The Route: South Of Westlake
Start Point: Hangzhou Mansion
Hangzhou Mansion-Yan'an Road-Qingchun Road-Hubin Road-Nanshan Road- Hupao Road-Yuhuangshan Road
Finishing Point: Yuhuangshan Road
Distance: 20 KM

The Route Introduction:
This hangzhou bicycle route includes the morden part of hangzhou as well as the most beautiful, nature and quite part of this city.

Depart from Hangzhou Mansion as a reference point, you’re going to want to head south on Yan’an Road until Heavenly Wing over Wu Hill. If you’d prefer to bike along West Lake as opposed to Hangzhou’s city center, head west when Yan’an Road hits Qingchun Road, then head south on Hubin Road along the south end of the West Lake. After about five blocks, Hubin runs into Nanshan , the hub of activity along West Lake’s south waterfront.

Continue on Nanshan until it turns west at the south corner of West Lake. Instead of turning west to follow Nanshan, continue straight on Yuhuangshan Road. This is where the scenery starts to get interesting, as the buildings spread out and the trees start to increase in volume. Stay on Yuhuangshan until you reach Lianhuafeng, which goes west. You’ll see the China National Silk Museum just before the turn. This museum is one of the best in Hangzhou, and worthy of a stop if this is where you choose to end your bike trip. It’s 3.41 miles from Wulin Square to the National Silk Museum, so 6.82 miles round trip (11 kilometres).

If you’re not feeling like a museum day or want a more intense bike ride, then head down Lianhuafeng, which twists through a neighborhood of detached traditional housing. If you choose to continue straight on Yuhuangshan, you’ll see some interesting scenery, but you’ll soon hit a tunnel that will take you south to the river and isn’t particularly fun to bike through. So I recommend taking Lianhuafeng, which winds through the forest south of Hangzhou for about 1.3 miles (2.1 kilometres), at which point it turns into Hupao Road. Go north on Hupao to head back towards the lake. If you’re looking to take a break, a great place for a rest is Shaonian Ertong Park. It’s not far north from the intersection of Lianhuafeng and Hupao, less than a quarter mile. You want to trek on, continue north on Hupao until it becomes Nanshan (about another mile). From there, it’s 6.3 miles (10.1 kilometres) back to Wulin Square. Roundtrip, that’s just over 11 miles.

Points of interest:
Hangzhou Mansion Area,Yan’an Road, Qingchun Road, Hubin Road: The most popular shopping center in Hangzhou. Specializes in luxury brands and internationally recognized cosmetics and clothing lines.

Yuhuangshan Road, Heavenly Wing over Wu Hill: This area used to the original place for the palace in the Southen Song Dynasty. You can see a lots of ancient buildings there. And this area is also one of the city's culture center in Hangzhou.

Nanshan: The most beautiful Road in Hangzhou with lots of bars, coffe shops, galleries.

China National Silk Museum, Hupao Road: This area has the most beautiful nature view in Hangzhou. Lots of drangon well tea bushes, trees scatter on both sides of the roads.

The Route: A spirited cycle-Breeze-ruffled Lotus at Quyuan Garden - Lingyin Monastery
Start Point: Breeze-ruffled Lotus at Quyuan Garden - Yanggong Causeway - Zhaogong Causeway -Lingyin Road
Finishing Point: Lingyin Monastery
Distance: 10 KM

The Route Introduction:
This hangzhou bicycle route includes the most green part of hangzhou as well as the most beautiful tea fields and quite part of this city.

Start from Breeze-ruffled Lotus at Quyuan Garden(northwest of the West Lake) to ride along Yanggong Causeway to the Zhaogong Causeway, this part of Hangzhou which can be said the most green part in the city with many trees on both sides of the road. Turn from Zhaogong Causeway to the Lingyin Road, the hilly 4-kilometre (2.5-mile) road that leads west to the Temple of the Soul’s Retreat. One of China’s most cherished Buddhist temples, Lingyin Si (as it is known locally) was built in a forested valley more than 1,600 years ago. Today, its incense-filled halls display giant Buddhist statues including, in the Hall of Five Hundred Arhats, 500 seated figures in bronze, each weighing one ton. Before entering the formal entrance of the temple at the Hall of Heavenly Kings, park your bike outside and explore the Three Grottoes on Flying Peak, each adorned with hundreds of striking Buddhist carvings.

Points of interest:
Breeze-ruffled Lotus at Quyuan Garden: Qu Yuan Feng He (Breeze-ruffled Lotus at Quyuan Garden), well-known for its pink lotus blossoms and green lotus leaves swaying along with summer breeze, is one of  Ten Top Views of West Lake Scenic Area. This view has a story, which was related to Emperor Kangxi, who was the greatest ruler of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). It was said that this scene captured the attention of Emperor Kangxi. He indulged himself into the beauty and wrote the name for this site. Today, the royal inscription stele is well preserved and still stands in the park.

Yanggong Causeway: is one of “Three Causeways of West Lake” along with Bai Causeway and Su Causeway. Yanggong Causeway is located in the west of West Lake. It starts from Lingyin Road  in the north and connects Hupao Road in the south. Along the causeway, there are a lot of famous scenic spots like “Breeze-ruffled Lotus at Quyuan Garden”, Gold Sand Harbor, Maojiabu Scenic Area, “Viewing Fish at Flower Pond”. The causeway was named Yanggong Causeway in memory of Yang Mengying, the governor of Hangzhou in the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644). It is Yang Mengying who started in 1508 the construction of the causeway with the dredging from West Lake.

Lingyin temple: One of China’s most cherished Buddhist temples, Lingyin Si (as it is known locally) was built in a forested valley more than 1,600 years ago.
