Two days is tight for island plus tulou, but the schedule was realistic and we did not feel dragged around. The guide kept the group small and flexible on when we stopped for lunch. The Hakka heritage part near the end was the memory we took home.

The round trip from Xiamen to the tulou clusters takes a full day and the schedule was honest about that. We would have liked a little more time inside one building, but the guide explained the history well and let us walk around freely. We spent the first day on Gulangyu and then headed inland to the Fujian tulou earth houses, which were the highlight of the trip. The drive is long, so it helped to have a comfortable car and a guide who pointed things out along the way. Meals were mostly our own choice, which we preferred.

Five days gave us time to see Gulangyu, the temple, the coast, and some places off the main tourist path. The guide was flexible and adjusted two of the afternoons when it rained, swapping in a museum and a tea house. We liked that lunches were left open so we could pick our own restaurants.

We enjoyed the mix of island and mainland sights, and the local seafood market stop on day two was fun. The only thing we would change is more free time at the Botanical Garden, which we had to leave early. Our guide was friendly and the driver was careful on the hills.

Day one was Gulangyu with the gardens and the piano museum, and day two took us to Nanputuo Temple, the university area, and Zhongshan Road. Having the two days be different meant we did not feel like we repeated ourselves. The guide was punctual for both days and the car was comfortable.
