Impression West Lake in Hangzhou is a city landscape show that combines natural scenery, cultural history, and high-tech techniques. Located on Beishan Road in the West Lake District of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, it draws inspiration from the rich historical and cultural heritage and the beautiful natural scenery of West Lake. It delves into ancient folklore and myths of Hangzhou, bringing to life representative elements of the cultural history of West Lake on stage.
The performance of Impression West Lake mainly revolves around the theme of "rain," using high-tech methods to recreate the natural charm of rain on West Lake and the rain of West Lake. The performance venue stretches from Zhaogongdike in the south to Yuehu Tower in the north, from Quyuan Fenghe, including the West Lake Club in the west, to Sudi in the east. The entire performance takes place on the stage of the natural landscape. The audience seats are set on the retractable stands south of Yuehu Tower, designed not to disrupt tourist attractions during the day while providing tiered seating for the audience during performances. Additionally, the performance area on the lake is equipped with unique lighting and laser effects to meet the needs of the stage and background.
Impression West Lake is organized by Hangzhou Impression West Lake Cultural Development Co., Ltd., with renowned directors Zhang Yimou, Wang Chaoge, and Fan Yue as the main creative team. Internationally acclaimed music master Kitaro serves as the composer, and Jane Zhang performs the theme song "Love."
The transition from "Impression West Lake" to "Enduring Memories of Hangzhou" was a significant cultural innovation undertaken by Hangzhou to welcome the 2016 G20 Summit. On September 4, 2016, during the G20 Summit, Hangzhou, as the host city, presented a brand new large-scale water-based scene performance symphony concert called "Enduring Memories of Hangzhou."
This performance, based on the original "Impression West Lake," was improved upon to fully showcase the natural scenery and cultural history of Hangzhou, with requirements of incorporating elements of West Lake, the characteristics of Hangzhou, the charm of the Jiangnan region, the grandeur of China, and the idea of global unity. The performance was divided into five chapters, including "Spring River and Flowers in the Moonlight," "Tea Picking Dance," "Butterfly Lovers," "High Mountains and Flowing Water," and "Ode to Joy." Each chapter seamlessly integrated local characteristics of Hangzhou, such as Longjing tea and Yue opera, while utilizing modern technological elements such as lighting, sound effects, and stage design to present a visual and auditory feast for the audience.
"Enduring Memories of Hangzhou" is not just a performance but also an important means for Hangzhou, as a historical and cultural city, to showcase its unique charm and cultural heritage to the world. This performance allowed attending dignitaries and audiences to deeply experience the beauty and charm of Hangzhou and has become an important calling card for the tourism industry in Hangzhou.
One of the most unique poems of the Tang dynasty, "Spring River in the Flower Moon Night" is included in virtually all historical surveys of Tang poetry. And this poem has inspired numerous later artworks. The composer Peng Xiuwen created a piece of orchestral music with the same name, which has since entered the classical repertoire for the traditional Chinese instrument guzheng.
Among the Chinese dances, the folk dance is the greatest in number, the most extensive and the deepest into life, and the closest to everyone's daily life. The soft music and graceful dancing, as well as the cheerful and warm atmosphere, vividly represent the unique labor involved in traditional tea picking in Hangzhou.
Based on the Chinese folk tale 'Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai', this romantic tragedy portrays 'Romeo and Juliet' from a distinctly Chinese angle, with its two star-crossed lovers facing the obstacle of a class-based arranged marriage and the archaic idea that "a virtuous woman is one without any talent."
One of the most historically famous Chinese musical compositions, High Mountains and Flowing Water, describes the virility, depth, decency and nobleness of the mountain, and the harmony between the flowing water and the high mountain. It evokes scenery of a fresh spring cheerfully flowing down the high mountain, while the surf is blowing up mischievously.
This act moves the famous Russian Ballet Swan Lake to the West Lake. It was a greeting to the world famous Ballet Dance. And it was the first time s Ballet Dance on a real lake with water.
This national famous song in china express the love to hometown and to the country. Welcome to the most beautiful city in China - Hangzhou.
Since ancient times, the moon has been the eternal theme of Chinese literature and the inspiration for countless poets, which can be seen in numerous descriptions of the moon in Chinese poems. In China, the full moon has a long association with family reunion. Hence, viewing the full moon with friends and family has become a traditional custom.
This famous song was played in the opening ceremony of Beijing Olympic games and the Hongkong Handover ceremony. It includes the typical Chinese cultural element and known worldwide, so is honored as the second Chinese anthems.
The show will reach its ends with Beethoven’s Ode to Joy. The heaven on earth-Hangzhou!

The show was really impressive and I think anyone visiting Hangzhou should see the show. The show is spectacular. We have seen the ‘Impression’ shows in Guilin and it was also very good. It is covered so fine to go even if raining. There is a stench in the venue and not sure if it is coming from the lake but nevertheless, the show itself was good. It may be difficult to get a ride after the show due to traffic control. Best bet to do a short walk to Shanghai-La hotel and try to get a taxi from there. A relaxing respite after a day of heavy travel. Allowed us to slow down and soak in the local culture.
I have tried to contact my hotel, and they are not responding. If I purchase the tickets online on your website, passport number and payment by Paypal in advanced are required? And how much is the Impression west lake show?

We are staying in Shanghai. How far out is Hangzhou from Shanghai. Do we get rides out there and then return at night or stay in Hangzhou if we want to watch the Impression Westlake?
Replied:02 July 2020
We would highly recommend spending more than part of a day in Hangzhou. It is a beautiful city well worth exploring. Many of our clients were regretted only having part of a day and an overnight before heading out the next morning. If you are tight on schedule, you also can watch the show before heading back to Shanghai by the high speed train. (You can take the train leaves for Shanghai after 9:30pm)
Is it necessary to go to the show with a guide on a tour? Did anyone go alone or privately? I have heard that it is difficult to catch a taxi after the show? We do not speak Chinese. I was thinking of staying at the Wyndham Royal and walking back from the show. Do-able? We don't mind walking but want to be safe while walking back along the lake after the first show. Thank you!
Replied:02 July 2020
It is not necessary to hire a guide if only for the show, as you can buy the ticket in the ticket counter or book the show tickets online with us, and if you want to walk back to your hotel along the lakeside (It takes around 30 minutes from the show p;ace to your hotel), it is absolutely safe even in the evening. It's a pleasant activity to walk along the westlake. Or you can walk to the Shangrila hotel to get a taxi which will be easier than get a taxi on the road after the show.
Good performance, lighting, and music are amazing. A little bit cold and windy at night (autumn on october). Bring a jacket. Would highly recommend getting the VIP seat tickets instead since you're already there. the non VIP seats are at the sides and the majority of the seats are actually VIP seats! The booking was easy and it was very easy to get the show tickets.
Absolutely stunning show! One of the best things I've seen in my life. I totally recommend it to anyone visiting Hangzhou. It's a must! The booking with Hangzhou Private Tour was fast and easy. Instructions were clear, the place was easy to locate. Overall, a great experience!
