New Version of Impression West Lake Unveils May 1

In the evening gala of the 2016 G20 Summit, at the west side of Hangzhou’s Su Causeway, a most splendid live-action performance dubbed, “Enduring Memories of Hangzhou” dazzled the world. During that autumnal night, people were gathered in front of the TV to enjoy the unparalleled performance, as thrilled as when they first watched Spring Gala, the Chinese equivalent to America’s Super Bowl thirty years ago.

However, after the summit, “Enduring Memories of Hangzhou” was only performed temporarily in October and November, during which tickets were hard to purchase with touts often selling them three times higher than the original price. After 40 days of performance, the show, regarded by many as an art piece, has been paused. However, yesterday the Impression West Lake Company has stated that starting from May 1, “Enduring Memories of Hangzhou” will once again take center stage on the waters of the West Lake and will act as the updated version of the original Impression West Lake.

70 Percent of Elements in G20 Summit Gala Version Preserved
According to the newest script, except for the program Moonlight which has been replaced with the ethnic orchestral music “Colorful Clouds Chasing the Moon”, all other programs are in line with the G20 Summit Gala Version, including the bewitching “Giant Fan” and “Swan Lake”. It’s been said that over 70 Percent of Elements of the G20 Summit Gala Version will be preserved to give the audience a performance in line with the one G20 leaders and ladies witnessed.

A large majority of people were hugely impressed with the performance of Swan Lake, which applies the high-end technology of holographic display. With the use of this modern technology a ballerina, resembling a swan, is copied many times to depict many dancing swans. In total 24 ballet dancers performed this dance and all were professionals (Normally, to become a professional ballet dancer nine years is needed.) In addition, the highlight of the performance lies also on the stage itself and on the backdrops. The stage can descend as low as three meters under water with the lowest part falling 60 meters under water; and backdrops such as an artificial moon and illuminated trees all use waterproof materials.

In the auditorium, there is even more high-end technology being applied, which is the automatic stretch rain shelter system. The rain shelter system, protecting 2000 seats, is comprised of five giant downward L-shaped suspension stainless steel columns, which are distributed at the back of the auditorium, with each column being 19 meters apart from each other, thus ensuring a broad view. These columns themselves are pieces of art and each is engraved with views of the “Top Ten Views of West Lake” such as “Three Pools Mirroring the Moon” and “Leifeng Pagoda in Evening Glow”. Also, the five metal roof beams with special grooves glitter together with glimmering ripples at night. The grooves, made by 50 workmen, are designed by a professor of the Academy of Art (one of the best art schools in China).

The Visual Feast Will be On from May 1

The mesmerizing performance will commence on May 1 and there are two shows every day, which may change depending on the total number of spectators. The first performance commences at 7:45 pm and the second at 9:15 pm, and both run for approximately 50 minutes. According to the original practice, the performance will be on view until the end of December and will then return to the West Lake on March 1. Altogether there are 2000 seats and the price varies from 360 RMB to 680 RMB with the VIP seats, which face the center of the stage, being the most expensive.   Tickets for “Enduring Memories of Hangzhou” are available from April 30 from both online platforms and on-the-spot ticket offices. Tickets can be purchased two days in advance at most, and both citizens and tourists need to present their valid ID cards, and upon entering the show, ID cards used to purchase the tickets also need to be presented.
