Your guide greets you at your hotel in Huangshan with a Your Way Holiday sign and begins the three-day journey across Anhui. Your guide will walk you through the plan for the days ahead and share background on the region, from hiking the Yellow Mountains to visiting traditional Huizhou villages, so you can see the area as a local would.
Before the first visit, your guide and driver take you to a well-known local restaurant for Anhui food. Your guide will explain the menu and the history of dishes such as Bamboo Shoots with Ham and Mandarin Fish in Sweet and Sour Sauce, and how old cooking methods and local ingredients shape the flavor of Huizhou.
Your first stop is Chengkan Village, known for a layout planned on feng shui principles and a symmetrical street design. Your guide will read the meaning of the twin water channels that run through the village and lead you along narrow lanes past ancestral halls, stone bridges, and carved wooden doors, explaining how the arrangement reflects Confucian ideas about family.
In the afternoon, continue to Tangmo Village, a water town once favored by imperial scholars. Your guide will show you the winding lanes, stone archways, and lotus ponds and will tell how Tangmo grew during the Ming and Qing dynasties. In a historic courtyard you will take part in a Huangmei Opera session, learning simple lines, gestures, and rhythms from a local performer and trying on costume.
Next is a hands-on stone rubbing session. With help from your guide, you will learn how locals copy carved writing and poetry onto paper using rice paper, ink, and pressure. The activity takes place in a shaded courtyard of mossy stone walls and old steles, and your guide will help you choose an inscription and press a clean copy to take home.
Before you leave, visit the terraced tea gardens around the village, where families have grown the local teas for generations. You will pick seasonal leaves with tea farmers while your guide explains the difference between the green, yellow, and black teas made in Anhui and the ways tea shaped daily life in Huizhou.
At the end of the day, your guide and driver take you back to your hotel. The return is calm and unhurried, and you will have the stone rubbing and the tea you picked to show for it, ready for the mountain the next day.
After breakfast, the day starts with a guided visit to Hongcun Village, one of the best-known ancient settlements in China and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Set among hills and open water, Hongcun is often compared to a painting. Your guide begins at Nanhu Academy, a school from the Ming and Qing dynasties beside South Lake, and will explain the Confucian values that shaped learning and daily life in the village. You will have time to look at the wood carvings and the reflections on the lake.
From Nanhu Academy, take a short walk through the old lanes to Yuezhao, also called Moon Pond. The crescent-shaped water mirrors the Ming and Qing buildings around it. Your guide will explain how the pond sat at the center of village life and how its layout drew the interest of artists and film crews.
Leave Hongcun for Tunxi Old Street, a historic market street in the Tunxi District of Huangshan with a record going back to the Song Dynasty. Along the stone-paved lane you can see Hui-style buildings with wooden carvings and black-tiled roofs, and shop for Huangshan inkstones, tea leaves, and local snacks. Your guide will point out places to try Hui cooking or a cup of Maofeng tea, a well-known local leaf.
In the evening, enjoy dinner at a restaurant on Tunxi Old Street, where you can taste more Hui dishes as the street stays lively after dark. After dinner, your guide drives you back to your hotel so you are rested for the mountain the next day.
After breakfast your guide drives you to the mountain and you reach Begin-to-Believe Peak by cable car. The car rises above the ridges, and the first light spreads across the Yellow Mountains. From the peak you can look out over granite spires and, on clear mornings, a sea of clouds. Your guided walk then follows the ridge trails.
Next comes the Monkey Watching the Sea viewpoint. A rock on the cliff edge is shaped like a monkey looking out over the valley, and on still mornings clouds fill the ground below it. Your guide will tell the local story behind the name and point out the best places for photographs.
Continue to Lion Peak, one of the well-known summits of Huangshan, named for rock shapes that read like a lion. The peak stands at about 1,835 meters (6,020 feet) and opens onto wide views over the mountains and valleys. Your guide will cover the geology and the legends of the spot and why it appears in Chinese painting and verse.
For lunch your guide brings you two local foods to try, Huangshan Sesame Cake (Shaobing) and Maotoufu. The sesame cake is baked until golden, crisp outside and soft within, and goes well with tea. Maotoufu is fermented bean curd, a strong-flavored local specialty served as a side. Both belong to the everyday food culture of the area.
After lunch, walk to Danxia Peak, one of the named peaks of the range. It faces out over the western ridges and is a favored point for the view and for its quiet. Your guide will explain how the peak fits into the layout of the mountain and where its name comes from.
From there your guide leads a hike along paved paths with handrails to Flying Over Rock, a large boulder that looks as if it has landed on the cliff edge. It is one of the best-known landmarks on Huangshan and gives broad views over the surrounding peaks. Your guide will share the legends behind the rock and give you time for photographs.
The last climb of the day is Bright Summit, among the highest points on the mountain. The trail up is open, and from the top you can see across the peaks and old pines, often at their best in the last light of the day. Your guide will find a good vantage point before you head down.
As the day ends, your guide helps you make the way back down and drives you to your hotel in Huangshan. The evening is quiet after the day on the mountain, and your guide assists with anything you need on arrival.

Three days combining hiking and the Huizhou villages gave a fuller picture than just the mountain. The peaks and the sea of clouds were the obvious highlight. Only reason I am giving four stars is one of the village stops felt a bit rushed between rain and a late start, we would have liked another hour. The guide was still good and the whole thing was well organised, just one day got a little squeezed.
Our group of friends had a fantastic three-day tour covering Chengkan Village, Tangmo Village, Hongcun Village, Tunxi Old Street, and the iconic peaks of Huangshan including Begin-to-Believe Peak, Monkey Watching the Sea, Lion Peak, Danxia Peak, and Flying Over Rock. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and engaging, providing deep insights into the history and legends of each village and peak. The itinerary was efficiently planned, letting us see all the key spots while still having time to enjoy the views and take photos.
